About Kettle Moraine State Forest-Southern Unit
The Kettle Moraine State Forest—Southern Unit, located 61 miles east of Madison and 37 miles southwest of Milwaukee, features three main campgrounds: Pinewoods Campground near Dousman, Horserider’s Campground near Palmyra, and Whitewater Lake Visitor Center and Campground near Whitewater. Campers are not required to check in; they should proceed directly to their reserved site using the address and campground name provided in their confirmation letter.
The Kettle Moraine Natural History Association, a nonprofit organization, supports the preservation of the forest’s natural features through membership dues, donations, and gift shop sales. It has contributed matching funds for Stewardship grants and assists in invasive plant removal. Membership applications are available at the forest headquarters, and public participation is encouraged to aid in conservation efforts.
