About Union Grove State Park

Union Grove State Park began as a county park in 1936 when Brule Creek was dammed to create a small lake, which later silted in and the dam was removed. The land was leased to the State of South Dakota in 1946 and has since served as a quiet retreat for residents and visitors. Rich glacial soils support dense native woodlands, providing habitat for deer, wild turkeys, beaver, and numerous bird species including cardinals, orioles, grosbeaks, warblers, and blue jays.

The park offers over four miles of multi-use trails for horseback riding, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing, along with a 1.2-mile hiking-only trail following Brule Creek. Camping is available in shaded sites, including a dedicated horse camp, with year-round access though water systems and showers may be closed from October through April. Hunting is permitted from October 1 to April 30 during designated seasons, with firearms and bows prohibited in campground and picnic areas.
