About Spearfish Canyon Nature Area

Spearfish Canyon Nature Area encompasses Roughlock Falls, Spearfish Falls, and Savoy Pond, situated within one of the most scenic regions of the Black Hills. A connected trail system provides access to all three sites, offering views of waterfalls and vibrant fall foliage, while supporting bird watching, wildlife viewing, fishing, and picnicking. The rare American Dipper, a gray, stocky bird that forages underwater by swimming or walking along stream beds, is frequently observed here.

The area is open year-round, but FS Road 222 from Savoy to Roughlock Falls closes from December 15 to March 31 due to snowmobile use. The trail from Spearfish Canyon Lodge to Roughlock Falls remains accessible throughout the winter. Access is via FDR 222, one mile west of the Scenic Byway at Savoy. Visitors should exercise caution and use the area at their own risk.
