About Pickerel Lake Recreation Area
Pickerel Lake is a 955-acre natural lake known for its cool, spring-fed waters and is among the deepest in the state. Its name originates from an American Indian term meaning "where you spear long fish." Excursion boats were common on the lake until the early 1900s, and a fish hatchery operated there from 1929 until its abandonment in 1979, when operations moved to Blue Dog Lake.
The recreation area features two campgrounds with 65 campsites, seven camping cabins, and one modern cabin. The park is open year-round, though between October 1 and April 30, showers, flush toilets, and other water systems may be closed—vault toilets typically remain accessible. Visitors should contact the park directly for current facility status.
