About Fort Rock State Natural Area
Fort Rock is a National Natural Landmark rising dramatically from the flat expanse of Oregon’s high desert, its towering jagged rock walls forming a near-circular tuff ring that resembles a fort. This geological feature was once an island in a prehistoric shallow sea, and visitors walking its interior can imagine early Indigenous peoples canoeing around what was then water.
The nearby Fort Rock Cave, site of the oldest known sandals in North America—dated to 9,350–10,500 years ago—is accessible only by guided tour. Stargazing is permitted after hours in the designated day-use area with a completed permit displayed on the vehicle dashboard.
