About Fort Rock Cave
Fort Rock Cave, a National Historic Landmark located near Fort Rock State Natural Area, is renowned for the discovery of 9,350 to 10,500-year-old sagebrush sandals, offering critical insight into early human habitation in the region. The site reflects the deep cultural heritage of Native American tribes whose oral traditions and artifacts continue to tell the story of the Fort Rock Basin.
Access to the cave is restricted and available only through guided state park tours, which require advance reservations. Tours operate annually from late April to mid/late June, depending on weather, with schedules released in two rounds starting in January. Photography is prohibited at the cave site.
