About Washington Rock State Park
Washington Rock State Park, situated on top of Watchung Mountain in Green Brook Township, is a historic site where General George Washington observed British troop movements in June 1777. From the natural rock outcropping, he gained a thirty-mile panoramic view of the valley, enabling him to direct his forces to flank General William Howe’s army and cut off their retreat. The park was established in 1913 to commemorate this pivotal moment in the American Revolution.
Today, the park is managed by the Somerset County Park Commission and is known for its scenic overlook and quiet recreational use, including picnicking. Facilities are partially accessible for persons with disabilities.
