About Warren Grove Recreation Area

Warren Grove Recreation Area, acquired from the National Park Service in the 1970s, is a 617-acre undeveloped wilderness west of Warren Grove. It contains the Little Pine Plains, a globally rare forest community where mature trees average only 8–10 feet in height, and supports a large population of the state-endangered broom crowberry (Corema conradii) along road edges and open fields. The historic 1686 Keith Line, which originally divided East and West Jersey, bisects the area and marks the convergence of Ocean and Burlington counties and five municipal boundaries within less than an eighth of a mile.

The site offers passive recreation opportunities such as birding and hiking through the Pinelands, with its unique pygmy forest ecosystem believed to be shaped by fire ecology. The stunted tree canopy allows views over the treetops, a distinctive feature of this rare pine and oak forest community found in only a few places worldwide.
