About Spruce Run Recreation Area
Spruce Run Recreation Area, located in Hunterdon County, encompasses a 1,290-acre reservoir with 15 miles of shoreline and is the third largest reservoir in New Jersey, after Round Valley and Wanaque. It offers picnicking, camping, swimming, boating, and fishing, with year-round outdoor activities.
The Spruce Run Reservoir was constructed as one of the state’s first water supply facilities, following the 1958 Water Supply Law and Water Bond Act, which aimed to conserve and manage New Jersey’s water resources. The recreation area was developed and dedicated in 1973.
