About Pigeon Swamp State Park
Pigeon Swamp State Park is a National Natural Landmark featuring mixed habitats of open ponds, upland hardwood forest, and inner coastal plain lowland deciduous hardwood forest. The park’s name derives from Ann Pidgeon, the original landowner, not from the passenger pigeons that once nested here in large numbers before their extinction.
Visitors can explore trails through the preserve, where native flora such as sweetgum, red maple, pin oak, and black gum thrive alongside wildlife including kestrels, red-tailed hawks, and white-tailed deer. Hiking is permitted and encouraged.
