About Elgin Schoolhouse State Historic Park
Several generations of children were educated in this one-room schoolhouse, which served grades one through eight from 1922 to 1967. In 1924, an addition was built to provide housing for the teacher, addressing the lack of nearby accommodations and helping secure consistent staffing due to competitive pay and provided lodging.
The schoolhouse retains many original furnishings and artifacts, with remaining items accurately representative of the era. The site is open for tours on the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., or by appointment through Kershaw-Ryan State Park. Access requires traveling 36 miles of graded gravel road (Kane Springs Road) from Highway 93, which is unsuitable for trailers or motor homes. No services are available along the route. Disturbing or removing any historic features is prohibited under state and federal law.
