About Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park
The old Anaconda Copper Company smelter stack, completed in 1919, stands 585 feet tall and is one of the tallest free-standing brick structures in the world, with an inside diameter of 75 feet at the base tapering to 60 feet at the top. It surpasses the height of the Washington Monument, which is 555 feet.
Since the smelter closed in 1980, the stack has become a symbol of the region’s industrial past and the economic challenges faced by communities reliant on finite resources. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, it can only be viewed and photographed from a distance, with interpretive signs at the viewing site near Goodman Park providing historical context.
