About J.W. Wells State Park

J.W. Wells State Park, established in 1925, is a 700-acre park located along 3 miles of Lake Michigan’s Green Bay, 30 miles south of Escanaba in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The park features a modern campground, a designated swim beach, picnic areas, rustic cabins, and a trail with three warming shelters. It also includes an accessible playground and offers nature education programming.

The land was donated to the state by the children of John Walter Wells, a local lumberman. Many of the park’s structures, landscaping, and utility systems were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s and 1940s. Recent winter efforts included clearing ash trees to improve campground safety and views.
