About Robert Toombs House State Historic Site
Robert Toombs House State Historic Site is located in Washington, Georgia, and preserves the antebellum home of Robert Toombs, a prominent planter, lawyer, and political figure who served as a state legislator, U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator, and briefly as Confederate Secretary of State before becoming a brigadier general in the Army of Northern Virginia. Toombs played a pivotal role in Georgia’s secession and later helped draft the Constitution of 1877, which governed the state until 1945.
Visitors can tour the historic house and grounds, which feature exhibits and displays detailing Toombs’ life and legacy. Leashed pets are permitted on the site’s trails but are not allowed inside buildings. The site offers a quiet, educational experience focused on 19th-century Georgia history and the Civil War era.
