About Plains Visitors Center

The Plains Visitors Center is located on U.S. Highway 280, one mile east of the town of Plains, Georgia, the hometown of former President Jimmy Carter. Opened on December 6, 1977, the center sits on 17 acres featuring a 2.5-acre pond, picnic tables, covered picnic areas with grills, and native plantings including the Georgia state tree (live oak) and state flower (Cherokee rose). Two butterfly gardens, honoring former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, are part of the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail.

The building includes two large porches with rocking chairs for resting, and an interior exhibit room dedicated to the life and presidency of President Carter. Inside, visitors can find brochures and informational materials highlighting Georgia State Parks and other regional attractions and historic sites.
