About Griswoldville Battlefield
The Battle of Griswoldville occurred on November 22, 1864, near the industrial town of Griswoldville, which housed a Confederate pistol factory and other mills. Confederate militia forces under General Pleasant Philips launched a frontal assault against Union troops, who repelled the attack with heavy casualties among the Georgia militiamen—many of whom were older men and youths too young or old for regular service. Though a Union victory, the bravery of the militia is remembered.
Today, the seventeen-acre battlefield site features quiet wooded fields and Battleline Branch, a peaceful stream. A small monument, kiosk, and interpretive panels mark the location. The site is owned by the state of Georgia and administered by Jarrell Plantation State Historic Site in Juliette, under the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Parks and Historic Sites Division.
