About Fort Morris State Historic Site
Fort Morris State Historic Site is located on a bluff overlooking Saint Catherines Sound along the Medway River in Georgia, preserving the original earthworks of a Revolutionary War and War of 1812 fortification that defended the seaport of Sunbury. In 1778, patriot forces under Colonel John McIntosh famously refused British demands to surrender with the reply, “Come and take it!” The fort fell after a heavy bombardment in January 1779 and was later reused during the War of 1812. Today, visitors can walk among the restored earthworks, view exhibits and a film about Sunbury’s colonial history, and explore the site’s museum.
The park offers scenic overlooks of the coastal landscape and opportunities for birdwatching, with binoculars and field guides available for borrowing. Species such as downy and pileated woodpeckers, goldfinches, wood storks, painted buntings, and great egrets are commonly seen. Leashed pets are permitted on historic trails but are not allowed in buildings.
