About Allatoona Pass Battlefield

Allatoona Pass is a historically significant site in Georgia, notable for two major Civil War events: the 1862 Great Locomotive Chase, when James Andrews’ raiders passed through aboard the locomotive General, and the October 5, 1864, battle following the fall of Atlanta, where over 5,000 men fought and nearly 30 percent became casualties. Well-preserved earthworks and trenches remain visible today, along with interpretive panels and monuments honoring the soldiers who fought there.

The site is accessible via Exit 283 (Emerson Allatoona Road) off I-75 and is managed by Red Top Mountain State Park under the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. No recreational activities beyond historical interpretation are offered at the pass itself.
